Pit bull terriers are the most common banned breed living in homes new figures have shown
Government data obtained following a BBC Freedom of Information request to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs showed 3,499 banned dogs are currently registered, with 3,316 of them in England. Most of the dogs are pit bull terriers, with 149 banned dogs in Wales and 13 in Scotland.
Police may need to first obtain court permission to do this if the dog is in a private place, such as its owner's home. But if it is in a public place such as a park, or a private place police already have a warrant for on an unrelated matter , the dog can be immediately seized. These rules will apply to owners of the popular XL bully breed by the end of 2023, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the breed a “danger to our communities” after a string of attacks.
