Director Taika Waititi, whose brand of twee self-importance has been self-evident ever since his inexplicably lauded, returns to helm the MCU franchise where Hemsworth is one of the last original Avengers standing . Joining Thor in his fight against Gorr, we have a hyper-girl-powered version of Dr Foster with appropriately large biceps, and the return of Tessa Thompson as King Valkyrie, given a few mealy-mouthed hints at flirtation to imply queerness but never more than the safe level of Disney corporate limits.
The heart of the film, amid the still-romantic frisson between Jane and Thor, is that Jane’s new powers to wield godly artefacts come with a toll: back on Earth, she’s fighting a terminal illness. This attempt to address something serious – and earthbound – falls uncomfortably flat given the broad silliness of the rest of the film.
Hemsworth has always been likeable as the smug superhero-god with the Adonis-like physique to match , but the risky attempt to transfer that charisma or to spread it around to other characters is not a gamble that pays off.
