Focus grouped slogans will only get you so far
Phrases that have obviously been focus group tested to the “nth” degree litter each speech and are repeated time and time again in the hope that they are bedded into the popular consciousness.As a political artisan I can appreciate a well turned phrase and crafted slogan. They may stir the audience of party members in the conference hall but they have to be backed up with serious policy making.
In a detailed report drafted by Andrew Fisher and myself we estimated that just to address some of the crises in our public services an incoming Labour government will need to raise £78bn each year. There was no evidence in either Rachel Reeves or Keir Starmer’s speech that either of them fully appreciatewhen they go into government. There continues to be no acknowledgment of the scale of the resources that would need to be raised.
The opening of a new generation of colleges was announced to provide the skills training needed for a modern growing economy. This will be welcomed across the education sector and by business but those managing the budgets of existing cash strapped colleges will be understandably asking the question “what about us?”
