Some 62% said they were better off than their parents.
Providing better quality and more intensive public education for children from poor and at-risk backgrounds can significantly increase their chances at ending the cycle of poverty.
Some 1,329 former students born in 1979 and 1980, including 553 who benefited from four or more years in the program, were included in the study. The biggest gains were seen among those regarded as most at risk of living in poverty in adulthood. Some 62% of participants said they were better off than their parents.
Early interventions can have big effects on a child’s future. It is more than 50 years since the federal government launched early intervention programs such as Head Start as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “War On Poverty.”
