Listen... Washington, D.C.’s football team posted a black square to its Twitter page on June 2 to participate in the Blackout Tuesday trend. It didn’t go over well.
“They’re tired of this negative representation, whether it’s sports mascots or when really negative representations show up in TV and film or advertising,” says Echo Hawk. “They’re over it; they’re done. They want to be seen for who they are today, in all of their beauty, their diversity, their complexity.” She also notes the allyship of non-Native young people who are committed to the movement.
“It’s one of those smaller victories in a larger fight, but it would definitely be important,” Carlos says, and that she hopes it would “maybe serve as a catalyst” for other teams to change their names and mascots too, and for non-Native peoples to educate themselves accordingly., 72% of Americans believe schools need to make significant changes in how they teach students about Native cultures and history.
Tamez-Pochel can’t wait until harmful stereotypes against Native peoples are “one less thing that I have to worry about.” He continues, “It shouldn’t have taken that long” for organizations to do the right thing, but a step in the right direction will hopefully save future generations of Native peoples from feeling unsafe.
“What I’m doing now matters because Native peoples, we don’t just think about ourselves or our children,” he explains. “We’re constantly in the mindset of thinking seven generations ahead. ‘How is what I do now going to affect my grandchildren’s children?’ ….I’m glad that seven generations ago someone thought of me. So now I can do the same and think about the future.”
