The treatment of Abbott has been dreadful, but she may still prove to be a useful pawn in Starmer’s play for power
Protestors gather outside Hackney Town Hall in support of Diane Abbott : that the manifesto was in place, the campaign plans drawn up, the troops raring to go. Clearly, though, none of them had the foresight resolve the future of one of the party’s most high-profile MPs before the campaign actually kicked off..
Shadow ministers sent out to talk about the party’s health plans this week were instead asked predominantly about Abbott. On Wednesday, Labour held an emergency press conference designed to focus attention on the Tories’ un-costed spending plans. It barely got a mention in the evening news bulletins, which were instead dominated by Abbottgate.
The extent to which they succeed in that task will determine the size of Starmer’s governing majority will be, if as forecast he wins on 4 July. Thanks to their shambolic handling of the Abbott affair, he and his team have wasted one of those six weeks without making any real progress towards that aim.that have landed well with their core voters.
Shadow ministers and Labour officials are hugely frustrated, and in some cases downright appalled, at the way this has dragged on, but they too have been kept in the dark. This week I interviewed a shadow minister who was forced to admit he didn’t have any more idea than anyone else about what was going on. But surely he had asked for some insight before coming on air, I asked? Yes, he said, he’d spoken to the Labour press team, and they didn’t have a clue either. What a ludicrous situation.
