June’s birthstone is no longer a byword for boring.
Tears of the gods, stalwart for grannies, a boy’s best friend or dissolved in vinegar for an Egyptian Queen – June’s birthstone, pearl, is not, of course, a stone, but the creation of a shellfish in response to an irritant.
From the tiniest seed pearls clustered like bunches of miniature grapes, to the giant La Peregrina once owned by, pearls can vary hugely in size, shape and hue, but often appear as perfectly symmetrical, luminous white orbs. Once the preserve of the unfeasibly wealthy, when Japanese pearl farmer Kokichi Mikimoto worked out how to culture them in 1893, they became more attainable.
