“This is a story that they are telling from the perspective of people who are watching their country be attacked.” AP executive editor JuliePace speaks to V.F. about Evgeniy Maloletka and Mstyslav Chernov's coverage from Mariupol, Ukraine.

and photos captured by the two AP journalists after the attack. “They want to get the facts out—it’s not just about the images, which are incredibly powerful,” said Pace. “It’s about making sure people know factual information about what’s happening in a place where communications are really difficult.” The city, blockaded by Russian forces, has been mostly without electricity and mobile phone network for days.

After the attack on the maternity ward, Pace said, Chernov and Maloletka felt a commitment to the story, despite the conditions in Mariupol, where food and water reserves are running out as a result of Russia’s siege. “They felt really strongly that they needed to go back” and “find out what happened to the women who were there.”

“Everything the world is seeing through their photos and their video, they’re witnessing as humans on the ground too,” Pace says. “And we try to remember that as well.” Ukrainian servicemen and volunteers carry a man injured when Russia shelled a hospital in Mariupol on March 15.Explosions as a Russian army tank fires on an apartment building in Mariupol.By Evgeniy Maloletka/ AP Photo.
