English football offers top-class national sides and domestic leagues, the goals are flowing and attendances keep on growing
Nostalgia is a powerful emotion and many people will tell you modern football is rubbish, particularly when compared to the period when they first became invested in the sport. On that basis, it’s worth a summary of the last century in English football.
Although England haven’t won a major tournament — losing to on penalties in the Euro 2020 final is their best performance since winning the World Cup in 1966 — the general level of performance in recent years has been excellent. What else do you want? Entertainment? Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to use the game’s simplest metric, goals, this season’s Premier League is on course for a quite significant rise in the goals-per-game rate.
