Australia faces a reckoning after the huge-scale defeat of the Yes vote and a campaign marred by online disinformation and racism

Polls had predicted that the Yes vote faced defeat, but the scale of the defeat has taken many by surprise IN SYDNEY – “This is the equivalent of the UK’s Brexit”, one voter told me outside a polling station in north Sydney.“It’s going to be up to the Prime Minister to fix those wounds, because in my view they are going to run deep”, he added.Pollsters had predicted that this referendum would fail, but the scale of the defeat on Saturday has shocked many.
But they overwhelmingly voted against changing the constitution to recognise First Nations Peoples through a new body that would advise Parliament on Indigenous matters. Supporters of the Voice said it would help to close the gap that exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. First Nations people have a lower life expectancy than non-Indigenous Australians and also higher rates of suicide and imprisonment.
The lack of clarity about what the Voice would look like and how it would operate was seized on by the ‘No’ campaign.
