The movement to remove racist mascots at the school level has gained momentum in recent years. In 2021, Colorado lawmakersprohibiting Native mascots in public schools. Schools that do not comply will be subject to a fine of $25,000 per month. Representative Barbara McLahlan, a sponsor of the Colorado bill, sees it as a necessary step. "It is simply disrespectful," she tells.
The Center for Native American Youth hopes that legislation to ban racist mascots becomes more common. “Research tells us that racist mascots cause psychological harm, impacting Native youth’s self-esteem, feelings, personal and community wealth, as well as aspirations for achievement,” says Nikki Pitre, the center’s executive director.
