'We've got the moorings set up ready, so there's more to go at'
A water taxi service could be in line for a welcome return to Manchester and Salford as city centre business leaders called for a 'reimagining of the waterways'.
The venue announced on Thursday Metrolink travel would be included for free for Co-op Live ticket holders to mark the launch from April 20 to June 30. A shuttle bus service running from the Etihad campus to Piccadilly in central Manchester will also take to the roads for ticket holders, with a maximum of 10 buses per show.
A private operator of the service had secured local transport funding to build a number of pontoons, but the Manchester Evening News reported work on the Ordsall Chord rail link, which led to the temporary closure of the river navigation, scuppered the plans and the funding was reallocated to cycling and walking projects.
A new public park is planned for the land and a new primary school could be built - with the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal referenced heavily in the proposals as a backdrop for a new community of homes, attractions, leisure and business. The panel also featured Factory International Executive Director Randel Bryan and Jessica Koravos, the president of Oak View Group International, the developer behind Co-op Live.
A 'festival' walking route - between Holt Town tram stop and the Etihad Campus - is also being devised, set to feature art installations, LED lights and performance art.
