with his parents, he said he was shut down. His parents told him the Black Lives Matter movement was made up of “criminals looking for attention” and that Jarred’s beliefs were those of an “ungodly person.”
In the years since Trump’s election, Jarred has sparred with his family over and over. After he posted on Facebook about his Black Lives Matter support and fought with his uncle over the dangers posed by theThis summer, Jarred’s parents have mostly avoided conversations about the movement. But, he said, they have stopped saying “all lives matter,” which he counts as a small victory. He thinks they’re slowly starting to understand the reason behind the protests. That, he said, feels really good.
“It’s normal for younger generations to want to do things in a way that is different than their predecessors,” he said. “Every generation needs to establish itself and have an identity of its own. They try, from their perspective, to improve upon the world they are living in.” Jeanette thinks that part of the reason her mother isn’t supportive of BLM is that, as an African woman, she sees herself and her experience as separate from that of Black Americans. “She feels like it has nothing to do with her personally,” Jeanette said.
