“If we really want to reclaim a better country for us, we must use pop culture in our country to access everyone because that’s one thing that’s easy to talk about.”
Filipino academic Ruanni Tupas, faculty member in the Department of Culture, Communication and Media at London’s IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, is no stranger to fandom, being part of SB19’s A’Tin and Alamat’s Magiliw. According to Tupas, young people have mobilized themselves long before elections, in relief operations after typhoons and other disasters.
That investment in the world of Filipino youth is something that Tupas has observed in Robredo. “She is fairly familiar with K-pop and K-drama culture,” Tupas says. “She spends a great deal of time during rallies reading individual posters and placards, and she knows how important it is among those who live for ‘shout outs’ and ‘mention parties.
The youth of the Philippines must watch as their future is dangled over the edge of a precipice. But as Robredo’s supporters know,, tomorrow is pink, and the work of young people will continue.
