A record amount of solar panels are expected to be installed in the U.S. this year, but the fate of companies in the industry has diverged.
The stocks of firms that focus on the utility market like First Solar and Array Technologies are soaring, but those that service residential rooftop customers, such as Sunrun , have struggled. New statistics released on Thursday show why.
First Solar in particular has benefited from the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers subsidies for domestic manufacturing. Solar developers have also figured out supply chain problems which made it more difficult to import panels from Asia in 2022. However, the utility market is facing some challenges from high interest rates and high hardware costs which have hurt procurements and could lead to slower growth in the future, the report’s authors wrote.
The biggest culprit has been high interest rates, which have made it harder for consumers to finance solar installations. In some states, relatively low electricity rates have made solar less attractive, because consumers can’t save as much by putting panels on their roofs.

Faggiolati pumps to power efficient dewatering at Mpumalanga power stationIntegrated Pump Technology has successfully secured an order for three Faggiolati stainless submersible pumps to be deployed at one of the major coal fired power stations located in Mpumalanga. The order was made possible due to the company's understanding of dewatering applications and the ability to select the correct materials of construction to meet the application's exact requirements. Justin Bawden, Key Accounts Manager at Integrated Pump Technology, says that the adaptability of the Faggiolati pumps allows the company to design units to suit specific application needs. This level of flexibility provides an added assurance that the pumps will meet the demanding operating parameters.
