In Wolverine #31, as Logan believes he has gotten his revenge on his betrayer, the seemingly dead Beast's head horrifically splits open, and a bunch of full-grown mushrooms erupt from the cavity where his brain should be. Noting that the now evil Beast has been "experimenting with Krakoan biotech from day one," it is clear that Hank has somehow found a way to infest his clones with a fungal infection, much like the one from The Last of Us, that will only activate upon his death.
