One Witchger star originally auditioned for the lead role Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series, ultimately losing the part to Henry Cavill.
The Witcher star Eamon Farren has revealed that he originally auditioned to play Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix fantasy series. Based on Andrzej Sapkowski's series of best-selling novels by the same name, Netflix's The Witcher was a highly anticipated series prior to its release in 2019 thanks to the success of the books and the video game franchise. Unsurprisingly, over 200 actors auditioned for the lead role of Geralt before the show's star Henry Cavill landed the part.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per Comic Book Resources, during a panel appearance at MCM London Comic Con, Farren, who plays Nilfgaardian commander Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach, including in the current Witcher season 3, revealed that he was among those who auditioned for the coveted role of Geralt. The actor recalled his "shock" at losing out on the main part.
"I auditioned for Geralt's role to start with. And I didn't get that, which was shocking to me. I made my way to this other character that was like a mercenary sort of fighter/killer guy. I sent [the audition] off and didn't expect anything, and then I got the job and then we ended up in Budapest... It's been a wild ride."
Henry Cavill's Casting Was Crucial to The Witcher's Success While Farren's performance as the Nilfgaardian commander certainly exhibits his talents, as well as his prowess in terms of fight scenes, Cavill has become synonymous with The Witcher.
As a result, the actor's departure from the role, which was announced in October 2022 was a shock to viewers and Cavill's Witcher co-stars. Liam Hemsworth will be stepping up to replace Cavill as Geralt in The Witcher season 4, a controversial move that remains much-discussed by viewers.
