The Brown family had not long moved into their tenement home in Cowcaddens when they began to be rudely awakened in the middle of the night by strange sounds and ghostly apparitions.

In October 1923, a Glasgow street was gripped by an outbreak of supposed paranormal activity that made headlines up and down the country.

The Brown family, who had seven children, had moved into the property only weeks earlier, but soon began being rudely awoken in the early hours of the morning by strange sounds emanating from a dark corner of their single room. Not only did the knocking continue, but the manifestations progressed. The knocking became louder and more forceful and various items of furniture were seen to move. From underneath the floorboards, a sound of slow shuffling could be heard - not unlike the sound of an old woman walking across the room.

Speaking to the press, Mr Brown said the hauntings had left him and his family so shaken that they now wished to leave the property for good. "The vision of that unearthly figure made me cold, and for fully a quarter of an hour afterwards I was dead to my surroundings. My two lads who are in their teens have witnessed the spectre in various forms and are unnerved by the experience.
