The Thirsty Korean is closing at the end of the month, despite being popular with regulars
At this point in time, it’s safe to say that The Thirsty Korean is a local institution. Having set up shop on Chorlton’s Manchester Road some five years ago, it’s become known amongst foodies as one of the best places for authentic Korean dishes.
As a soundtrack of Korean rock music booms in the background, I sit down at my table where I am immediately recommended a number of dishes ranging from the ‘very spicy’ Oringeh Bokkeum - stir fried squid and noodles - to the ‘'medium spicy' Duruchigi, a pork dish with vegetables and steamed rice. Upon serving me my food, owner Eunji tells me that the idea is to just mix the rice and extra sauce into the noodle dish so that’s exactly what I do. Whilst it won't necessarily win any awards for how it looks once it's all mixed together , the meat is tender and tasty whilst the vegetables are fresh and pack the right amount of crunch to them. To top it off, the sauce is delectably rich and compliments everything perfectly.
As I try to finish up my overstacked plate of carbs, the restaurant is joined by a number of other diners who chat freely with Eunji about their day and ask her for updates on when she is set to close the venue. Opposite me, there’s a woman boldly eating one of the restaurant’s extra spicy dishes. She recalls how it is really hot but that’s how she likes it. I can’t help but look at my own dish of soy sauce noodles and feel like I’ve taken the coward's way out.
Dotted with personality on each wall, from paintings, signs, daily affirmations and even a banner declaring ‘dear onion, one day you will cry’, it’s places like these that simply can’t be recreated elsewhere and the magic exists in the very people who run them. Their love for what they do keeps the fuel in the tank.
