Neil Woods was embedded for six months in Mansfield working alongside one of Gunn's top men, known as 'the lieutenant'
A detective from Nottingham, who went undercover to help dismantle the drug empire of infamous gangster Colin Gunn, has shared his chilling experiences. Neil Woods, a former undercover drugs detective, spent half a year in Mansfield working closely with one of Gunn's top men, known as 'the lieutenant'.
"And that decided the next 14 years of my life. I found myself something I was good at in the police." He became an undercover police officer and in 2003 he was sent to Nottingham due to the extreme level of violence and firearm offences that were being recorded. He had identified someone associated with the gang - a man who was low down in the chain of command, a petty heroin addict and dealer, who had contacts to the names he wanted.
But Woods says that just a day after that meeting - which later led to the discovery of drug stashes in the city and St Ann's - his cover was almost blown. Woods had two police officers as his backup in case things didn't go as planned. Fletcher infiltrated Nottinghamshire Police on behalf of Colin Gunn at the young age of 19 and was being paid £2,000 per month by Gunn in addition to his police salary. "I am very glad that I trusted my instinct. That's how close I got."
While working undercover, he built relationships with many addicts, dealers and suppliers. He never met Colin Gunn, but his reputation was well-known and feared.
