, a coastal swim spot in her northern fishing village. “The idea for the pool came when hot water was found in the earth close by,” she says of the beloved bolthole, a donation to the community which overlooks arctic fjords. She’s also a brave ocean swimmer, “which is a huge challenge because the water is usually 4 degrees celsius. It reduces inflammation, strengthens the immune system, and gives you super soft skin. Plus it is a cathartic experience that clears your head.
Tradition plays a key part in swim culture. “Some people have been going to the same pool every day for all their lives, they have actual “seats” in the hot tubs and must have the same number key for the changing rooms,” says Maack. “It’s more like a religion and such a big part of people’s lives here, we take it very seriously.” Maack has her own methodical order to things, which incorporates a thorough hair routine for her icy locks.
Speaking of regimens: “I have my very special ritual that I do every time before bathing,” shares Bergman. “I dry brush from [feet] to heart, usingIcelandic salt scrub, do a shower meditation, and wash all my negative thoughts down the drain.” She’s also an avid cold water swimmer, either in the plunge pot or the magnesium-rich North Atlantic, a practice she began after a recent cancer scare and subsequent surgeries.
The First Lady gets the last word: “Though most of [the pools] are human-made structures, they connect us to nature, even within the city. They are deeply tied to the Icelandic mentality and ideas around Nordic wellness,” says Reid, who grew up in Canada before marrying and moving here in 2003. “The swimming culture here is one of the things I enjoy most about living in Iceland.”
