From 50 hours of overtime a week to scuffles with offenders, ex-prison guard Tony Cottendon reveals what working in the crumbling service is really like
He had been at the all-male Rochester Prison in Kent for a decade but, after getting his shoulder dislocated by awho, he says, had taken contraband drugs, he knew he had to pursue a different career. “I’m a pretty laid-back person, but you do start to think about your safety a lot,” he told] handed me what he thought was an ID card but, because he was high – on what I imagine to be spice or cannabis – he actually handed me a mobile phone,” he recalls.
, 47 per cent of officers who left last year had been in the role less than three years and a quarter less than 12 months. There is a leaving rate of 14.5 per cent among band three to five officers – an increase of 5.4 per cent compared to 2021.
Before he left, Cottendon had worked at Rochester for 10 years, but to find an officer with that experience now is increasingly rare, he says. “When I joined, there was a lot of staff around who had 10-plus years of service. When I left, you were lucky to be sharing a landing with someone who even had two years of service.”
It was common for Cottendon to work an extra 50 hours per week, as staff are unable to leave if an incident has occurred, the prison is on lockdown or offenders are protesting. “There was an alarm bell – an alert to an emergency –
