Walkers shut out of thousands of beauty spots, say campaigners -but landowners say law change would see sites overrun with visitors
Mass trespass protest at South Downs in 2023, organised by Right Roam, in the push for greater access is among its most cherished assets. But since the vast majority lies in private hands, the public are only able to enjoy a small fraction of it.
It’s just one of many individual battles taking place across the English countryside. Recent years have seen protesters stage “mass trespass” events to enter fenced-off land in Dartmoor, the South Downs and Totnes woods to show their anger. Richard Bramley, environment forum chair at the National Farmers’ Union , said discarded BBQs and litter left behind by wild campers was among the “increasing issues farmers are dealing with” on private land.“We believe that widening the right to roam, with a blanket approach, will only make the issues worse.”
She also argues that Scotland can accommodate a legal right to roam because it has a less dense population, as well as having more obvious walking routes. “You stray off the path and you’re knee-deep in heather.”But England’s access activists reject the idea scenic spots could be ruined. They argue a new right to roam could help foster a far greater interest among city-dwellers in protecting the countryside.
