Sunak is exposed by his own lack of authority and political instinct - and that of those promoting him
This wasn’t supposed to be the difficult week for Rishi Sunak. Next week there will be two by-elections in seats vacated by Conservatives, and possibly bad inflation figures, both of which could lead to more unrest in all wings of the Conservative Party.
Earlier in the year, Sunak ended up talking at a woman who was complaining to him about how long her mother had waited for NHS treatment. He did not, as some clips had suggested, walk away from her, but then neither did he actually bother to listen to what she had to say, continuing to broadcast government action and achievements.
The Prime Minister had gone into the session thinking he would get the most grief over that £1,000 bet. He had prepared jokes on that. Again, that he didn’t stop in his tracks as the broadcaster leaned towards him, hand outstretched, offering a wager on an amount of money that would make most people physically recoil, is revealing. He then claimed that he had been “surprised” by the bet, as though he was at the mercy of whoever asked him questions.
