With autumn and winter being the best time of the year for stargazing as a result of the darker days, one small community in Scotland has even been officially twinned with Mars.
Scotland is known for its secluded spots that are perfect for stargazing, but one remote village goes one step further and is even twinned with Mars.
This week will mark the 11th anniversary of the ceremony that was held to celebrate the 'twinning' of the two locations, which was held on October 20, 2012. The civil parish, which has a population of approximately 1,500, is located on the Scottish mainland, close the Isle of Skye. It is accessed via Mam Ratagan, a 339-metre single-track pass.
The event, which marked the first time that a settlement on Earth had been formally twinned with another planet, was the work of then-Glenelg and Arnisdale Development Trust officer Emma Garrick.
