The huge Haweswater Aqueduct water tunnel scheme will cost hundreds of millions to build
Water firm United Utilities says activity is ongoing to short-list business contractors for the huge Haweswater Aqueduct water tunnel scheme, estimated to be worth £1.75billion.
Money from by north-west households, through water bills over coming years, will go towards paying the successful contractors. The potential economic harm of construction work on local communities and business sectors such as village pubs, wedding venues, tourism and farming, has been raised by some Lancashire people in recent times. Some in the Ribble Valley want a full economic assessment done in the Forest of Bowland, for example.
"We will also continue to engage directly with residents, local authorities and other stakeholders, and inform them of upcoming enabling and construction activities, such as archaeological surveys and ground investigations. United Utilities says its procurement activity is carried out by its commercial department. It conduct business with around 1,700 suppliers every year, from major international corporations to sole traders. It says many factors are considered in choosing contractors.
United Utilities said it was seeking to appoint a competitively-appointed provider to design, build and fund six replacement tunnel sections and then maintain it for 25 years after construction.
