Twenty years after the NHL's first-ever regular-season outdoor game, a look behind the scenes of how the original came together.
Before joining the as team president in 2000, Patrick LaForge spent almost two decades of his professional life working for Molson Brewery. Whatever the title may have been, and there were a few along the way, LaForge will tell you his primary job was always to sell beer. LaForge was involved in beer consumer research and was always asking what interested beer drinkers.
LaForge had previously worked as president and CEO of Alpine Canada and saw how, annually, downhiller Brian Stemmle would organize for visiting World Cup skiers to play an informal outdoor game of hockey at Lake Louise. In the beginning, LaForge thought a made-for-TV event with maybe a thousand fans in attendance at Lake Louise might work. But then he consulted some engineers and was told 1,000 people sitting on bleachers would likely end up at the bottom of the lake. Not a good idea.
