A heart-stopping lesson in aerodynamics aside, the Carlton ultimately lacked the poise and precision that made theM5 the finest all-around performance sedan in the world at the time. It understeered doggedly in tight corners until that mountain of turbo torque finally overwhelmed the fat Goodyear Eagles at the rear. Then it spat sideways in a cloud of tire smoke. Traction control? Nope.
The R31 Early Version might have had more discreet spoilers and wings than the R31 GTS-R, but it still looked like a race car. And, as I soon discovered, it drove like one, too. I had arranged for a Japanese photographer to stand on one of the corners to get an action shot or two. I stabbed the gas halfway through, and the back end instantly broke loose. I grabbed an armful of opposite lock, and then another, and then there wasn't any more to grab. The GTS was on the lockstops, arcing around the bend in a fury of tortured rubber and snarling turbo six. I was totally committed; lifting off was not an option.
