This provides a clearer indication as to whether hearers are actively reasoning about the speaker’s perspective in deriving an implicature, rather than just possibly matching an inferred interpretation to a speaker. We were also able to test the two components of, first, implicature derivation and, second, perspective-taking within the same paradigm, allowing for a clearer comparison of how these skills relate developmentally.
Participants sat on one side of a wooden display case with four cubby-holes, each with a double-sided picture-card . The picture cards were placed vertically in clear plastic card holders, which secured the base of the card only, so it was clear that the pictures were visible to both participants and experimenters. By the display, there was also a “card box” for placing selected cards in during the game.
