A former royal insider praised the King's decision to open up the Aberdeenshire estate to the public as a 'savvy' business move but revealed it had always been something the Queen and Philip dreaded as they wanted to protect their 'very sacred'.

A former royal butler has revealed the late Queen and Prince Philip were “fiercely worried’ about the protecting their private space at the Balmoral estate. Grant Harrold weighed in on the significance of the announcement this week that the King has decided to allow the public to look around private interiors of Balmoral Castle for the first time.

"Balmoral always was a very sacred place to the late Queen and Prince Philip. They were fiercely worried about the privacy of the place, you could go around the ballroom and grounds, but that was it. It was somewhere the Queen saw as her private home. Grant said he thinks the public might get to view the ‘iconic room’ where the Queen had her last official photo taken with former Prime Minister Liz Truss.

"I’m also wondering if the public might get to see a room a lot of people will recognise, which is the room where the Queen had official audiences with the Prime Ministers, it was where her last photo was taken.
