To someone more attuned to the men’s game, that probably sounds baffling. How is someone giving up that status to come back to college for another year, even with new NIL opportunities? I asked Chantel Jennings for her insight and, essentially, it comes down to basic math:The WNBA is pretty unique in that it’s relatively small. There are only 12 teams and most teams only carry 11 players. So in any given season, there are only 135 to 138 positions actually available.
Think about it: Diana Taurasi is entering her 19th season. Candace Parker her 16th, DeWanna Bonner her 15th. The list goes on.And, as Chantel pointed out to me, two of the top four picks in the 2020 draft are not rostered. The No. 4 pick in the 2021 draft played just 19 games before getting waived.
