Post Office scandal campaigner Alan Bates gives evidence at the IT Inquiry, saying he felt 'positive' about Horizon when it was first introduced. He goes on to reveal he became 'frustrated' with its 'many shorcomings'.
Lead campaigner and former subpostmaster Alan Bates told the Horizon IT inquiry today that the Post Office spent 23 years 'attempting to discredit and silence me'.
The organisation has come under fire since the airing of the ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, which put the Horizon IT scandal under the spotlight. In his witness statement, Mr Bates said the Post Office had spent the entirety of the 23 years he has been campaigning 'denying, lying, defending, and attempting to discredit and silence me'.

Mr Bates also told the inquiry that he never got a response to a letter he sent to the Post Office in December 2000 in which he raised concerns about the Horizon system. 'But I think it was partly pretty obvious they were determined to - they were after me one way or another, and the build-up of correspondence over the period was certainly pointing in that direction.'Lead campaigner and former subpostmaster Alan Bates walks into Aldwych House todayMr Bates also said the Post Office terminated his contract as a subpostmaster because 'they didn't like me standing up to them'.
The former subpostmaster told the inquiry: 'The key issue has always been to expose the truth right from the outset because the other things, they followed on - once you know the truth about issues, the rest will hopefully follow on afterwards.'I hadn't expected to be doing this so much by myself but it got more and more complex and it was harder and harder to share out work as a bigger group to take things forward.
In his letter dated July 8, 2010, Mr Bates told Sir Ed: 'It's not that you can't get involved or cannot investigate the matter, after all you do own 100 per cent of the shares and normally shareholders are concerned about the morality of the business they own. 'The alternative - further delay, to allow the Post Office to get its disclosure house in order - is not one which is acceptable.'Other prominent witnesses soon to give evidence include Lord Arbuthnot, member of the Horizon Compensation Advisory Board and former MP for North East Hampshire, who campaigned for years on behalf of subpostmasters.
She added: 'I have so far maintained my silence as I considered it inappropriate to comment publicly while the inquiry remains ongoing and before I have provided my oral evidence.
