'Whatever the regulatory approach, we know that passengers want more bus services going to more places that are more reliable'

The Labour Party has pledged to follow the route of Greater Manchester and end the 'postcode lottery' of bus services by speeding up the franchising process.

Private operators here now have no say over routes, fares, frequencies, timetables and overall standards, giving power back to the paying public. Researchers from the University of Leeds carried out the study on behalf of Friends of the Earth. They said bus services outside of London have seen a staggering fall, with provision plummeting by more than 60 per cent in 80 local authority areas.

Ms Haigh said: "Reliable, affordable and regular buses are the difference between opportunity and isolation for millions of people across the country. Four decades of disastrous deregulation of Britain's buses has robbed communities of a say over the vital services that they depend on, instead handing power to unaccountable private operators who have slashed services.

"Local leaders already have extensive opportunities to influence and shape delivery of bus services through the contractual arrangements available under 'enhanced partnerships'. Whatever the regulatory approach, we know that passengers want more bus services going to more places that are also more reliable and more swift."

"Because Rishi Sunak and the Government took the long-term decision to cancel HS2 phase 2, we have been able to extend the £2 bus fare cap and invest £1 billion in bus services across the Midlands and the North, delivering on our plan to invest in the transport links people rely on.”
