The Volkswagen Jetta may have started out as an afterthought to the globally successful Golf, but the compact sedan went on to become a star in its own right.
More important for the future, this Jetta represents an investment in quality. The gambit works at first, as sales are goosed around the time the first models to adhere to this strategy, including this Jetta, launch. And owners certainly appreciate the feel of German quality baked into the fourth-generation car. But it's not a strategy that Volkswagen would practice forever, as sales soften and per-unit costs rise for expensive-to-develop cars like the refined MkIV Jetta.
