A female-led remake of Ricky Gervais’ The Office is now happening at Prime Video, more than a decade after NBC’s American remake ended.
Prime Video Australia is developing a remake of The Office, which will focus on a female manager this time around. Based on Ricky Gervais' and Stephen Merchant's short-lived British comedy of the same name, The Office first premiered on NBC in 2005 before coming to an end in 2013 after nine seasons. Both the American and British versions of the show followed eccentric managers, played respectively by Gervais and Steve Carrell, at struggling paper companies.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, per Deadline, Gervais' original premise is set to be adapted once more, with Prime Video Australia working on a new version of The Office starring comedian Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard, the manager at packaging company Flinley Craddick.
As both the American and British versions of The Office make clear, much of the success of the show will depend on the supporting cast members that are assembled. The Australian remake's cast will include Edith Poor, Jonny Brugh, Lucy Schmit, Steen Raskopoulos, Pallavi Sharda, Shari Sebbens, Firass Dirani, Josh Thomson, Susan Ling Young, and Raj Labade.
Only one season of the show has been ordered so far but, if it proves popular, it could run for multiple seasons. It remains unclear if or when The Office Australia will become available for viewing on the American version of Prime Video. With this new take on The Office focusing on a female lead and coming more than 20 years after Gervais and Merchant's original, it has an exciting opportunity to explore more nuances of the modern office environment of today.
