Four-time Emmy-nominated composer Kris Bowers returns to the 'Bridgerton' universe for its prequel series.
The composer spoke about which instruments he used, his preparation for this show and whether there was a scene that was harder to compose than others. The opening, just because it was the first cue that I wrote, and it was really just setting the tone for how this show would feel a bit different from. That was one that took a handful of attempts at finding something that really felt like it was the sound of this show.
[Music supervisor] Alexandra Patsavas and I spoke a lot about Black composers and composers of color in that time period as well, and she shared with me a lot of music written by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. And I ironically had been tapped to work on a movie about him at the same time [, directed by Stephen Williams], so I did a lot of research on him, and some of the music is inspired by him as well.
As far as palette research, I really wanted the sound, especially her sound, to have a different type of modernity to it thatfeels like it’s steeped in the sound of French impressionistic romantic music. I wanted a lot of this music to feel like it’s steeped in more modern, classical composers. I did a lot of digging into John Adams, Steve Reich, Béla Bartók and even more modern composers, like Jessie Montgomery and Gabriella Smith. That was really a new space to explore.
