Common is no stranger to centerstage. After making his Broadway debut in ‘Between Riverside and Crazy’, the rapper speaks to VF about adjusting to life in the theater and more.
“When I met with [Guirgis] he said, ‘Okay, cool. I like you, but you may be too evolved for this character,’” Common recalls. “That’s the word he used. I said, ‘Man, listen. I’m an actor first and foremost. Two, I’m from the south side of Chicago.’ He’s like, ‘Man, we need that sewer rat.
“‘Glory’ was one of them songs, man, we didn’t even know if we were in consideration for having a song in that movie,” he says. “I just had an inkling. God spoke and was like, Call John. And I did it, and I listened, and it became what it became.”he saw yet another opportunity to blend his activism and his art.
