Wirral Council has revoked the pub's licence
The Monkey’s Nuts on Market Street in Birkenhead had its licence suspended in April following reports of serious crime and disorder at the premises. This was followed by a meeting that took place on April 30 where councillors decided to revoke the licence which means the pub has closed.
Following an investigation, David Hughes, 27, of Market Street, was arrested, charged and convicted with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and possessing an offensive weapon in a private place. He was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and an unpaid work and rehabilitation activity. The gun and a knuckleduster were also confiscated.
A Wirral Council report, seen by the LDRS, said a number of complaints had been received since the current licence holder had taken over the pub, which “include allegations of noise emanating from the premises, drug-dealing taking place at the premises, drug taking by customers of the premises, and the premises opening beyond the hours permitted on their licence.”
The council said it contacted the previous licence holder on January 24 who said he had “nothing to do with the business and only “put his name on it to help a mate out,” had had no involvement in the running of the premises and had “no idea what was going on.” He said Mr Jones and another individual had been running the bar.
As it has not been filled out correctly, this application wasn’t valid and a second application was made on February 15 which asked for Tracy Williams to be appointed to oversee and hold the licence.
