Exclusive: Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni gave us a peek into TheMandalorian writing room as they debated Luke Skywalker's Jedi status in the StarWars universe:
The Mandalorian executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau debate Luke Skywalker's status as a Jedi. The Jedi were nearly wiped from existence when the Empire rose to power and destroyed the Jedi Order. Because of this, many Force-sensitive children never trained to become Jedi.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Screen Rant recently spoke with Filoni and Favreau about The Mandalorian's third season, and when discussing Grogu's Jedi status, they began debating Luke Skywalker as well. Filoni made the argument that Jedi training and philosophy are a way of life, and Yoda never technically confirmed that Luke is a Jedi. Favreau quickly countered with Yoda's final words to Luke.
Dave Filoni: The interesting question is how you define when someone is a Jedi. That's the real question, because the Jedi is a way of training. It's a way of philosophy and being.Dave Filoni: [Grogu] trained when he was young, and [so did] Luke. Yoda didn't confirm that he was a Jedi, remember? He says, "Oh, you think you're a Jedi? Not so fast." He had to pass the trials.Dave Filoni: That's interesting. We've seen a few more pop up.
In The Mandalorian season 2, Luke feels Grogu's call and takes him away from Din Djarin to train in the ways of a Jedi. Some may argue that Luke is not truly a Jedi Master at this point, but there is a strong argument in his favor. He may not have gone through the standard training or passed the traditional trials of a Jedi, but he follows the core principles of their philosophy and even puts himself in danger to serve the greater good as ascribed by their belief system.
That is what the debate about what makes someone a Jedi boils down to. Kanan Jarrus was a padawan with the Jedi Order before Order 66, and Yoda indicates he has earned the title of Jedi Master in Rebels, but he too took a non-traditional route. Ahsoka left the order as a padawan, never becoming a fully-fledged Jedi, but she is seen as a Jedi by the galaxy.
