If Gilbert Hilton got his hands on a colander, or a candelabra, or a towel rack, or an egg tray, he attached it to his car. At the zenith of its existence, the Badillac—a name he coined—was covered with hundreds of Goodwill finds.
There are those among us who are thrilled if we can manage to keep our cars washed. We do not splash out on fancy rims or trim; we are proud if we manage to apply touch-up paint to the parking-lot dings and scratches we acquire. Not for us is the Pilot Automotive Accent Door Guard in patterned chrome, or the Bully Vector Hood Scoop. But Gilbert Hilton was just built different.
Even as a young man, Hilton had a gift for getting noticed. He was a flashy dresser—he favored red suits topped off with a red hat—and a great dancer. He loved the attention that came with both. He had grown up admiring the tricked-out cars that he saw cruising his West Philadelphia neighborhood. The first “nice” car that he bought was a repossessed ’65 Cadillac that was done up ina “gangsta-lean look.” He once said that, whenever he pulled up in that car, people fainted.
Hilton’s first venture into accessorizing the SRX was out of necessity. It seemed as if, every time he turned around, there was a mark on the car, which drove him crazy. At Pep Boys, he bought a roll of chrome molding trim, to protect the car while adding a little flair. “And that’s how it started,” his wife, Evonne, said recently. “He put the chrome on the car, and it went from there.
“I hated his car,” Evonne told me, the other day, when I spoke by phone to her and her granddaughter Ty Mitchell. Evonne and Gilbert were married for more than forty years, and she described him as the nicest person she had ever known. But she never shared his pleasure in the spotlight. “I didn’t feel comfortable. People were taking pictures of the car all the time. We’d park at the store and come out and there would be a crowd around it.
