Breast Friends Northamptonshire currently supports around 500 people affected by the disease in the county
Here in the UK, one woman is diagnosed every ten minutes with breast cancer. It is the most common cancer in the UK and it can also affect men in rare cases.
The support group was started in 2017, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and wanted to speak to people who would understand her situation. She said: “Seven years ago, I just wanted to be able to speak openly about it. It started off as an evening coffee meet to begin with and it just grew massively as a result of the need in the area.”
Leonie says while breast cancer awareness has a month-long campaign, secondary cancer awareness - when breast cancer spreads around the body - is only for one day. She said: “Those who are living with cancer which becomes their secondary should be recognised all year round. Breast Friends is a peer-to-peer support group but, alongside their awareness campaigning, also focus on many aspects of coping with the disease. They provide free bags for people going through surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy full of products to support them.
As for their peer to peer support, Leonie says it’s incredibly important for those going through breast cancer to speak to others having a similar experience. She said: “People get this relief that there is somebody else who understands what you’re going through
