Harry Melling is always unforgettable, but everyone is always shocked to realize where they've seen him before.
It’s the desperation of that performer that lingers in the mind of the viewer. Every performance he gives is the performance of a lifetime, because he’ll be lost if people turn their backs on him in that cruel and careless time. “At no point did I think, Oh, he’s been traveling around a lot. This is his sixth show of the week. He’s a bit done with it,” Melling says. “At every point, I think, when The Artist got to say these words, he would be absolutely committed to it.
Not only does The Artist have the ability to raise money for his own care, but he feels liberated. “In my head, it was always the case that this is someone who lives for those moments. Even if he’s performing to a handful of people, it doesn’t matter. He comes alive in those seconds of performing because he needs it. He needs it to keep himself going, because he doesn’t have much.”Buster Scruggs,
he became a playwright and performed onstage, but the screen roles were less than plentiful. “I mean, I knew I wanted to do it,” he says. “I knew I wanted to do it from a very young age. There’s quite a lot of actors in my family, so I had an understanding of the reality of it as opposed to the glamorized version.
“I think what interests me are the qualities that you may not see on the surface, but I know I have, like you say, the shadows inside you,” he says. “I think they’re the gold dust. They’re the things you really want to channel deep into and present to the world. Their voice is somehow louder, because they haven’t been heard much. Do you know what I mean? Somehow they’re so deep-rooted in you that they come out in almost a different register.
Some of these violent or explosive men are “as far away from me as you could possibly imagine,” he says. “But at the same time, there is that sort of maniacal quality that I know I do have, that restless drive. And it’s the same, I guess, with Poe. The way he thinks, it’s like a scattergun. I know I’ve got that also. All of these are definitely things that you know are inside you, and you want to share with the world, but…” He laughs. “Maybe you don’t immediately upon meeting people.
