Latino voters will decide key San Antonio swing district and may fuel a new era for Texas' GOP
Lujan, his son, a friend and his campaign manager grabbed a plastic table in the back of Rancho El Chema. Lujan is friends with the owner, and he tries to appear weekly at the cornhole tournaments. At first there would be a smattering of contestants each week, but it grew with time. That week, more than 160 competed.
When he came across someone who had traveled from out-of-state to play in the tournament, his smile was no less bright than for the potential voters. “Who’s John Lujan?” one man asked while they were chatting, pointing at his shirt, “Oh, that’s me,” Lujan said. “Ninety-five percent of these people are Democrats, but they’re voting for me,” he said. “This is my world. I’m learning that political world.”
Though Lujan is the only Republican ever elected to represent District 118, this is his second time holding the office. He also won a low-turnout special election in 2016, but he lost the seat that November in the general election. Like many Texas Democrats, Ramirez says that his campaign was transformed in June following the Uvalde school shooting and the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and clear the way for Texas and other states to fully ban abortion.Though he’s a hunter himself, Ramirez also wants to change the age Texans can acquire military-style rifles from 18 to 21.
