If there's one sight we hope to never see it's smoke pouring out from the top of the clock tower of Glasgow's famous Central Hotel - but that's precisely what happened in October 1951.
The clock tower of the Central Hotel is one of the most majestic sights on the Glasgow city centre skyline - and to think we could have lost it.
The fire threatened to tear right through the railway landmark, which back then had 500 rooms and was the largest and most luxurious hotel in the city. Luckily for us, the Grand Central Hotel remains one of Glasgow’s most prestigious establishments and has been visited by some of the most famous people to have ever stopped in the city.
