Since Matthew Perry's death, fans have been celebrating his performance as Chandler in Friends. And its comic skill was never clearer than in The One Where Everybody Finds Out, writes Laura Martin.
For 10 years of primetime TV, Matthew Perry – who died aged 54 this weekend – shone amid the Herculean comedy line-up of his five co-stars – Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc – to make the sarcastic and neurotic Chandler one of the funniest characters on the show.
The proceeding love-bluff game is a delightful display of slapstick, in which having cottoned on to the fact Phoebe and Rachel have found out about their relationship, Chandler and Monica decide to play them at their own game."The messers become the messees!” exclaims Chandler delightedly. The resulting kiss that Chandler and Phoebe attempt under mutual duress is a tour de force from both Perry and Kudrow, who touch lips like two repelling magnets. But in this agonising game of romantic chicken, it's Phoebe who wins, as Chandler breaks first.
