'I created BTFA because I wanted there to be a space for us to focus on our joy, to organize around that, around the things that make us happy, around the goals we have, the dreams we have, rather than working backwards from our deaths.”
“I noticed there was so much excitement about being in a space with other Black trans femmes in the arts, and we started to have that connection and that community for everyone that was there.”
For Jay, one of the most important pieces of BTFA is the support it provides to artists. “There are so many Black trans femmes being taken advantage of and not receiving support, feeling like they’re just pushing up against a wall to get their work made. I want it to feel like their work has value and that we all care about each other’s work, and that they’re supported in whatever they do.”
Jay believes the organization’s sudden rise in popularity is due to the convergence of many factors: the fact that people are spending more time on social media since they are stuck at home, the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, and the fact that all of this was happening during Pride month.
Jay used to fund most BTFA programs from her own pocket, but now, she said, she has funding for programming she didn’t think she’d be able to do for five to ten years.
