The first Donald Judd retrospective in 32 years is open now at the MuseumModernArt. Here, the museum’s curator discusses Judd’s legacy and how he is still influencing art today.
Fashion is in a state of significant flux right now, from the industry’s new eco-consciousness to the shift away from gendered dressing. But one constant is the presence of art on the runways. Season after season, designers cite artists as their inspiration, tacking images of specific paintings or sculptures to their mood boards.
That’s a simplistic introduction, but the significance of this retrospective is huge. For starters, it’s the first retrospective of Judd’s work in the U.S. in 32 years; the last one was at the Whitney in 1988, when Judd was still alive . Second, the sheer scale of his work makes it difficult to present and install it, especially when you’re gathering 70 pieces on MoMA’s sixth floor.
