IMAX chief quality officer David Keighley offers an informative tour showing how Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX screenings work and how the film is projected.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT IMAX chief quality officer David Keighley gives a behind-the-scenes tour showing how Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX screenings work. Released in theaters on July 21, Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man, J. Robert Oppenheimer – the father of the atomic bomb, who risked destroying the world in order to save it.

In a new video from IMAX, Keighley offered an informative tour showing how Oppenheimer IMAX 70mm screenings work. Watch the video below: At the IMAX headquarters in Los Angeles, the Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX film print, which is 11 miles long, runs up three stories high to the SR projector. The chief quality officer also explains how 70mm IMAX film, which is 15 perforations wide and 3 times bigger than 35mm film, runs through the projector using a "rolling loop," which is gentler on the film and allows it to last longer, about 2,000 passes through the projector.

Why Oppenheimer Is Best Seen In 70mm IMAX Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which has been lauded for an engrossing visual spectacle, demands to be seen on the biggest screen with the best sound possible. IMAX 70mm, which Nolan calls the "highest-quality imaging format that's ever been devised," uses real large format film to project the brightest and clearest images possible at 10 times the resolution of standard projection formats.

The only issue with the format is how rare it is. Only 19 theaters in the United States are capable of projecting 70mm IMAX film. This limited supply of seats, combined with the high demand, caused second-hand ticket prices to skyrocket, with some selling online for hundreds and thousands of dollars. However, this high demand is also what caused Oppenheimer to extend its run in IMAX 70mm to the end of August.
