Medina resident Tim Batiuk, who has written and illustrated one of America’s most beloved cartoon characters – and friends – announced Nov. 17 that the syndication of the strip will reach its conclusion on Dec. 31.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 14, the character“...Nothing goes on for infinity and so this wonderful odyssey will reach its conclusion,” he said.Batiuk graduated from Kent State University in 1969 and began his career teaching junior high arts and crafts in Elyria. While teaching, he began drawing a panel called “Rapping Around” for the Teen Page of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram in 1970, which led, in 1972, to the creation of Funky Winkerbean.
The comic strip appeared in 78 newspapers that year, and Batiuk retired from teaching to focus on the strip, working from his home studio. In addition to Funky Winkerbean, Batiuk also wrote and illustrated two other comic strips, both Funky Winkerbean spin-offs – “John Darling” which followed the exploits of a fictional talk-show host, andAs for Funky and friends, they will not disappear altogether.and said “I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Funky and friends popping up every now and then in that irascible school bus driver’s strip .
“The two strips have always existed in a shared universe, and I encourage all of you Funky fans out there to check it out. Between the blog, the books, and the pop-ups in Crankshaft, it’ll be like the Funky gang never left. Which I hope makes you feel as good as it does me,” he said.
