Lough Neagh became a giant glowing green budgie in the coalmine for just how badly our water sources have been polluted
It was no surprise to me the new Northern Ireland Audit Office report uncovered glaring failings from our leaders when it comes to just how polluted our precious waters are.
And as grateful as I am about the fact it got people talking, that came after years of ignored warnings that something needed to be done. As it currently stands, we have been failing targets to improve them for years and government strategies like, Going For Growth in agriculture have made the issue even worse.
But when you take ecological and chemical status combined, none of our waterways make the grade because of the presence of 'forever chemicals' like PFAs which are found in insecticides, household cleaning products, industrial applications and even our textiles. It horrified me to read how Northern Ireland Environment Agency’s Water Management Unit has just 167 staff and a budget of £8.6m. Let that sink in.
According to the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ own figures from 2012-2021 ‘pollution to a waterway’ and ‘livestock manure storage requirements’ were the areas consistently associated with the two highest rates of non-compliance. According to the Audit Report, NIEA made moves towards unannounced sampling of NIW discharges in 2016 - but eight years on, that still hasn’t happened.
I don’t know about you, but I am sure if everyone sat down and thought about how everything we do on the land and in our waterways impacts the quality of water coming out of our taps - attitudes might be a little different.
